18/12/2011 MFC Vs Espanyol Elite Match Review

Match Review by Gary Khoo
Final Score: Espanyol Elite 5 : 1 MFC (Guo Xian 1)

After 2 weeks without a game, MFC was back in action this Sunday against a certainly strong opponent, Espanyol Elite who is currently sitting at the top of the table. However, despite the opponents’ reputation, MFC was determined not to be beaten and to continue its 11th unbeaten run. With only 13 players to choose from, Captain Walter adopted a defensive 4-2-3-1 formation with the hope of containing our opponent.

The match kicked off with a heavy downpour, certainly making the game a more challenging one for Maestro. The match began with Elites having the majority share of possession, stringing a couple of neat passes around the middle of the park and spraying cross-field balls which seemed to catch the MFC backline offguard a couple of times. It was not long before Elites got their 1st goal. The goal was the result of a debatable penalty decision, after the referee penalized Kartik for handling the ball at the goal line. The Elite’s striker stepped up and converted the penalty confidently pass keeper Gary. Elite continued to dominate the game, and the second goal soon came from a long ball which the Elites’ striker controlled skillfully before unleashing a looping shot pass Gary who was caught off his line.

By then, MFC’s morale and concentration in the game was affected and the third goal soon came from a mistimes tackle, which allowed the Elites winger to advance into the penalty box and placing a measured shot pass keeper Gary. MFC did reduce the scoreline, with Guoxian stepping up confidently to convert a spotkick. However, before the 1st half ended, Elites got their 4th goal of the day through some sloppy defending by MFC, which allowed the Elite’s striker to smash the ball through the legs of Gary. 4-1 the score at half time.

During the half time team talk, Captain Walter gave the team a morale boosting hair dryer treatment and that seemed to pay off as MFC began the second half with more purpose and excellent defending. It was clear that every MFC player was throwing their body to block the shots and to keep in mind the rainy weather, every MFC player deserved a round of applause for their hardwork. That resulted in several injuries sustained by MFC players. MFC’s midfield managed to find their strikers several times, only to be ruled offside by the linesman.

Just before the game ended, Elite scored another goal. Their giant midfielder managed to bulldoze his way through the MFC defensive before slotting the ball past keeper Gary. 5-1 was the scoreline and it was not long before the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the game.
