31/10/2010 MFC Vs Pine Close Boys Review

Match Review by Alan Chiang
Final Score: PCB 2 : 0 MFC

One goal in each half was enough for Pine Close Boys to bring Maestro FC down to earth. Gary was equaled to numerous efforts from the opponents but his heroics were not enough to match a thunderous shot from PCB left winger in the first half, and a deflection shot towards the middle of the second half. Maestro’s goal drought also stretched to as many as three consecutive games.

Halloween party certainly did not go well with Maestro FC. In fact, October could be the month which Maestro would wish to forget. (NO MORE OCTOBER FEST, SO NO MORE BEER and PARTY! :p) Still without a win over the past weeks, Maestro headed into today’s game with a clear direction; a win.

Maestro had previously overcome the opponents 2-1 with goals from Rong An and Devesh. With a total of 17 players available for selection, it was without doubt that Maestro had a wide range of defensive and attacking options.

The game began with the usual 4-5-1 line-up, Howard and Walter providing the wing-back support with Alan and Wee Hian in the centre-back positions. Wingers were donned by Augustine and Jonathan while Han Rong, Alex and Chris Tan packed the central midfield. Rong An remained as the lone striker up front.

The 4-5-1 formation was useful for the first period of the half but soon after, PCB controlled the game through their central midfield. A through pass allowed PCB left winger to break free from Walter and Wee Hian and he unleashed a fierce shot past Gary. Maestro had a good chance from Paul, whose half volley was well-met by PCB goalkeeper. And Maestro hanged on for the entire half and headed into the break, seeking an answer.

Maestro started the second half with much fury, and with a new look side. There were several exchanges near the opponents’ half but Maestro just lacked the finishing touches. Later Maestro found themselves in the backseat when a deflected shot off Wee Hian went through on goal, leaving Gary hapless.

PCB almost got the third goal of the match only for Gary’s great reflexes to deny a goal-bound header. Maestro did respond immediately with a shot from Alex well kept out by PCB goalkeeper. However, the ball skimmed off the top bar and presented Norris with a great chance to nick a consolation goal. Lady luck was not on his side as he ballooned his shot over from one yard out.

Despite all the hard running, the pitch also needs more work. Muddy condition, no clear lines were just some of the bad characteristics of the field. Coupled with the opponents’ rash tackles, Maestro just did not find the groove to the game.

Maestro will be playing a friendly game next week to help boost losing spirit within the camp. Till then, Maestro can learn the positives from the negatives.

High Points

  • Other than Gary’s heroics, I don’t see any high points from this game.

Low Points

  • Pitch was BAD. Really bad.
  • Referee did not spot several dirty tricks from the opponents.
  • Passing was awful.
  • No communication among players.
  • Looks like more training is needed to understand this beautiful game. (As Guo Xian suggested)
