09/05/2010 MFC Vs CSB Marine Match Review

Match Review by Alex Sim
Final Score: MFC 5 : 1 CSB Marine (OG 1, Gifford 2, Guoxian 1, Norris 1

It was a friendly game this time, with the opponents being the very familiar CBS Red, which MFC has met them for like 24673503632 times since we got together. A total of 17 MFCians turned up for this friendly match, playing in a sibei song weather after the slight drizzle which made the pitch very playable. Calvin took his position between the sticks( mine and Norris stick that is), with Walter, Wee Hian, Guoxian and Lil Eric playing as a solid back four.

Midfield was also a power packed one with Alex and Hakim in the middle and Augustine and Chris Tan flanking them. Norris and Gifford led the lines for a fantastic game of football on a Sunday afternoon. Kudos to Gerald and Jonathan for betraying the bees to play for CBS Red as the opponents had not enough players to start the game with. (Paiseh, no pun intended and its all in the name of fun).

From the start, MFC showed their intent to win this game as they all knew the game was there for the taking. Attacking from the first whistle, the efforts paid off when the CBS keeper was pressured into hacking the ball out for a corner at 15m47s. Seeing no one was guarding the near post of the CBS Red goalmouth, Alex took a clever corner and with the pressure of Norris, the defender had little choice and
deflected the curled corner into his own net. First Blood drawn, like a virgin’s first night. That goal deflated CBS Red a little and within 5 minutes, the 2nd goal
for MFC arrived, this time via another Alex freekick. From the middle of the CBS Red’s half, Alex curled another free kick towards the penalty area and this time, it was Gifford who got on the scoresheet at 20m14s. Taking the cross first time, he striked the ball with a sweet volley and it lobbed the CBS keeper. Sibei swee but don’t know if it was taiko, you guys have to check with him on that.

CBS Red had a few half chances of their own, with Gerald pulling the strings for a couple of them, but Walter, Guoxian, Weehian, Zirong and Lil Eric held their lines well and cleared whatever threats thrown to them by the opponents. Maestro players once again proved their versatility in playing anywhere as both players foiled a few chances for MFC to extend their lead.

The first half ended 2-0 to MFC and spirits were high, but where was the bangla selling 100plus? After a well deserved break, MFC came out all guns blazing. Machiam like piah zhui. CBS Red had one particular change of their own, Guoxian’s nemesis, the Todak FC player whose size sounds like one particular MFC player name, Kartik. Get it?

The third goal arrived via courtesy of neat interchange play between Alex, Norris, Augustine and Gifford. Alex played neat one-two with Norris at the edge of the CBS penalty area, and when teed up to shoot, a nice dummy was played by Alex to allow the ball to roll through to Gifford and with Augustine bringing a defender with him to the longkang, Gifford had time and space to whack the ball into the roof of the net at 52m43s. 3-0 to MFC.

Complacency crept in once again to the ranks of MFC as poor defending from a Jonathan corner for CBS Red managed to find its way to Kartik, eh sorry, the Todak FC player. With a couple of his twists and turns, he placed a shot neatly at the bottom corner of Calvin’s left hand post. An eh kia beat another eh kia with a nice shot. 3-1 to MFC.

However, with the never say die attitude of all MFCians, the 4th goal duly arrived via Norris at 65m03s. Collecting a neat pass from Augustine at the edge of the area, he took a look at the char bo behind the goalpost, and calmly placed the ball with his left foot at the bottom corner of the CBS goalmouth. An replica of the CBS goal. 4-1 MFC. The fifth and final goal arrived at 78m35s through the leading striker Guoxian, taking the ball from his own half, he went on a mazy dribble and cut through the CBS defence like a knife through butter, but to be honest, he had only 2 defenders to beat. Good goal nonetheless as he placed the ball firmly beyond the keeper’s reach. 5-1 to MFC!

MFC had another great chance to extend the lead when the club captain, Walter was pulled down by the CBS defender in their penalty area. After a round of chee koo pat (or rather the lack of it), it was decided that Alex would take it. Gerald, however, played mind games with him. ( Something like when Wayne Bridge gets the ball, the defenders will whisper to him, “ I will steal your wife like John Terry did’)

Alex, being hum ji, took a comical penalty by shooting the penalty in the middle, missing it. It is now decided that Alex can only take free kicks and corners in future. The final whistle soon came and every single player was tired but satisfied, winning 5-1 and witnessing a few good plays. Well done Bees and looking forward to the next game. Ho seh la!

High Points
1) Gerald and Jonathan showing sportsmanship and playing for the opponents
2) 5 star performance from the Bees
3) Individual accolades were thrown out of the window as the team
covered ground for each of their teammates
4)Very fair refereeing from the Chinese referee

Low Points
1) Gerald and Jonathan betraying MFC by playing for the opponents.
2) Alex so lousy, miss penalty.
3) When Alex went to carry the box of mineral water at halftime, where
was the help? Talk about being a team.
