16/5/2010 MFC Vs Tripes FC Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: MFC 3 : 3 Tripes FC (Rong An 2, Gifford 1)

This weekend's opponents- Tripes FC, was a team from Sabah and being the first encounter for MFC, the opposition was unknown to MFC. With a total of 13 players for selection, MFC was looking forward to this friendly game against our neighbours from the north.

Tripes FC showed MFC just what trickery is all about right from the whistle. Every player was skillful as they cut through MFC midfield and defence like butter. MFC emerged unscathed thanks to some last ditch defending and poor finishing from Tripes FC.After some nervy starts, MFC slowly begun to find its footing and put Tripes FC's defence under pressure as well.

Rong An, Lil Eric's friend, was particularly active upfront alongside Guo Xian and the 2 pacy forwards linked up very well. It was not long before MFC got on the scoresheet thanks to Rong An's good finish. The 1-0 lead did not last long though as Tripes FC scored an equaliser from a freekick which deflected off the defensive wall.

The half time mood was sombre as the team was visibly tired from the heat. With not many substitutes, the only way was to dig deep and play well to win the game and MFC did better in the second half. The midfield was faster to close down on loose balls and the attackers put Tripes on the backfoot on many occasions. Zirong and Firdaus did well in defence especially with Tripes playing 3 pacy attackers upfront.

MFC took the lead again, this time Rong An was the provider. In what will be deemed as one of the best goals ever scored, Rong An brought the ball down the flanks before executing a "Baggio" style backfoot cross which fell nicely for Gifford to head past the keeper. The goal was the stuff made of legends and even Tripes FC players were applauding the effort!

Tripes FC would go onto to score again to bring the scores level but form player Rong An was on hand to tuck in his second goal of the game after a great link up play between him and Guo Xian put him clean through for a clinical finish. With MFC 3-2 up, there were more chances to score more, Alex, Gerald and Rong An missing more chances, The impact of the failure to score was only felt after Tripes FC capitalised on a loose midfield ball and charged ahead to score the equaliser despite best efforts from Chris Tan, Zirong and Firdaus to thwart the attack.

The match ended 3-3 and it was a good match for MFCians. Though the match could have gone either way if both teams had been more clinical, a draw was a fair result.

High Points
1) Rong An's performance- capping it off with 2 goals and a brillant assist for Gifford's header goal!
2) Good link player between Rong An and Guo Xian
3) Firdaus's first appearance after a long hiatus! The man is back!
4) Gary and Zirong making an effort to come down though both were tired from an earlier workout
5) Tripes FC is a good team who wanted to only play football, no fighting nonsense.

Low Points
1) All MFC players should pay their equal share of the money weekly so as to be fair to everyone
2) Turnout was a bit poor today
