10/1/2010 MFC Vs Slack Jack Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tab
Final Score: Slack Jack 1 : 2 MFC (Guo Xian 1, Howard 1)

After last week's hiatus against Bronx FC, MFC was looking for blood this week back at home. The opponents, Slack Jack, were definitely no slackers but MFC was out for a win. A big team for selection; MFC had the luxury of 4 substitutes to take on Slack Jack on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Gary, Brian's friend was the goalkeeper and he certainly looked the part during practice session as he threw himself to make several good shots. The defence did not have Captain Eric, but Wee Hian and Norris were on hand to deputise him.

The match begun with MFC controlling the midfield and to be honest, that was sufficient to keep Slack Jacks from playing a possession game. The midfield trio in a 4-5-1 formation kept the Slack Jacks in their own half and MFC had some half chances to put the Slack Jacks under threat as well.

MFC soon earned a free kick on the edge of the box and Guo Xian stepped up to deliver a good shot on goal. The ball took a wicked bounce in front of the keeper and slipped past him for the opening goal. MFC pressed on for another goal but the service to the strikers were just slightly off target.

In defence, MFC repelled some long balls from the Slack Jacks with Wee Hian and Norris providing good aerial protection. The Slacks Jacks did have 2 good chances to equalize in the first half but both attempts went over the bar. End of first half 1-0 to MFC.

The game was there for the taking as the Slack Jacks was running out of ideas to threaten MFC. The second half begun in the same fashion as the first, with MFC pushing further upfront to provide more threat upfront to get the second goal. It was Slack Jacks that got the next goal though via a freekick on the edge of the box. The shot was good but took a slight deflection off Wee Hian to deceive the keeper. 1-1 was the score but MFC never let their heads down.

MFC was finally rewarded with 10 minutes to spare when Alex delivered a long cross firled ball to Howard who strode down the right flank before cutting in to put the ball past the goalkeeper. 2-1 to MFC and it was time to put the game to rest. MFC poured forward past a demoralised Slack Jack team and had 2 good chances that went begging.

Slack Jack also pushed for an equaliser but did not get it as the defence was more than up to it. On one occasion, Calvin back tracked to stop a one on one chance with a good last ditch tackle.

MFC held on till the final whistle and it was 2-1 to MFC. Certainly a hard fought win against good opponents and it sure lifed the gloom from last week's defeat to Bronx FC.

High Points
1) Good weather and good pitch
2) MFC kept Slack Jacks at bay well
3) The game was played in good spirits by both team's players
4) Howard's long awaited goal!
5) Good defending by MFC as a team effort
6) Gary looked steady between the posts

Low Points
1) The referee was wrong on a few occasions; he gave some dubious decisions and the game could have swung either way thanks to him
2) Where's our missing Nike ball?
