17/1/2010 MFC Vs Little Flower Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tab
Final Score: Little Flower 1 : 2 MFC (Guo Xian 1, Own Goal 1)

Its the late winter for the Little Flowers as MFC put them to the sword in a hard fought 2-1 win.

MFC was playing in Bukit Timah for the 3rd time and with 2 previous losses at Bukit Timah, the team was looking to reverse the losing streak. However, Little Flower was no walkover as well. The fact that they held British Exiles to a draw meant that they were quite a good team.

A total of 13 players turned up for MFC and the regulars were all present, with Captain Eric leading the defence and Guo Xian leading the line.

The pitch was definitely a 7-a side field but MFC had no choice as there were no other fields for use. The pitch forced MFC to alter the playing style, to change from long ball to more of flank attacks.

The match begun with MFC being a cautious party, lauching a few attacks through the flanks. Each time, the Little Flower defence was able to nullify the threat and they posed a threat upfront as well but each time, the MFC keeper Gary read the game well to intercept their through balls. Norris had 2 good chances to score but both chances went begging.

With the score seemed to be heading for a 0-0 halftime score, Little Flower took the lead with a well taken goal. Their central midfielder No.16 took control of a loss ball in midfield, beat 2 MFC players before lashing a good shot beyond Gary to give Little Flower the lead. They almost extended that to 2 via a header from a corner but Walter was on the line to clear the ball away.

It ended 1-0 to Little Flower at half time but MFC was adamant about getting the win. The half time briefing further stirred up determination from the players and right from the start of the 2nd half, MFC pegged Little Flowers back in their half by tight marking and control of possession.

The long awaited equalizer soon came courtesy of a own goal from Calvin's freekick. His freekick from near the half way line looked harmless until a Little Flower defender decided to head the ball. His headers deflected the ball and it sailed into the top right post of the goal.

The goal spurred MFC on for another goal and the team pushed forward even more. The Little Flower players were backtracking most of the time and it looked almost certain that MFC would get on the scoresheet again. We did, courtesy of a penalty. Guo Xian's cross into the box was going to be met by Norris; however, a defender decided to push Norris off balance and the referee duly awarded the penalty. Under heavy pressure, Guo Xian did not disappoint as he despatched the penalty with his usual composure.

It was at this time that some of Little Flower's players self destructed by choosing to talk trash and play act instead of focusing on getting back into the game. A few individuals choose to mock MFC players by re-enacting the fouls awarded against them. It was amusing and entertaining- certainly a performance worthy of Bollywood!

A disjointed Little Flowers tried to get back into the game with a few players doing their best to find the equalizer, but MFC held on till the final whistle for a hard fought victory.

High Points
1) Good weather
2) MFC's defence of Wee Hian, Eric did very well, with Gary also putting a confident performance in goal
3) All players did well for this game

Low Points
1) The referee was comical and made a few wrong calls.
2) The pitch was NOT a 12 a side soccer field
3) Kudos to one Little Flowers player for putting up an entertaining performance for MFC. You know who you are...
4) Some Little Flower players choosing to use their mouths more than their feet. They should learn from their No. 16, 9 and 7 who were outstanding
