Match Review by Gary
This week match was against X-league opposition Marceles FC, which is certainly a formidable team, judging by their standings in the league. The weather was kind to the players for an afternoon 11am match. Before the match, Captain Walter made several announcements that Paul and Jason will be leaving for China soon, with underperforming goalkeeper Gary and star defender Brian leaving on loan to Samsung Bluewings for a period of 6 months.
As this is the first game against Marceles, there is not much information about their style of play and Captain Walter decided to adopt a cautious 4-5-1 formation with Norris playing as the lone striker upfront. MFC started the game brightly; being able to contain the opposition’s numerous attack and string together couple of passes in the middle of the park. It was also credit to Norris with his tireless running upfront to harass the Marceles’s defenders and make sure they did not have much time on the ball. However, it was Marceles who got on the score sheet first with a sublime through lob that found the right winger who managed to get the better of Jonathan before he unleash a weak shot pass Keeper Gary. It was not long before Marceles made it 2 goals. A corner was ironically headed in by the shortest player in the field! The half ended at 0-2 to Marceles FC.
During halftime, Captain Walter encouraged the team to play on despite the score line, with hope of making a comeback just like the games against Arima. Marceles started the 2nd half patiently, frustrating MFC and managed to win multiple corners out of their effort. It paid off as one of the resulting corners was converted with a top class volley into the back of the net. 3-0 the score! MFC was struggling to get back into the game and a string of passes by Marceles led to their winger advancing into the byline. The winger managed to get the ball into the penalty box before it was clinically strike into the bottom corner. MFC did have couple of chances as Hakim managed to get into good positions in the penalty box but unable to convert those opportunities. Little Eric made a short request for his special effort to be mentioned in the match review. A throw in by howard managed to find Little Eric and he unleashed a “waynerooney” like bicycle kick but it did not troubled the goalkeeper. Nice effort Little Eric. The scoreline would have been more without those charismatic defending by Big and Little Eric, Alan and Chris. It was not long before the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the match. Final score a 4-0win to Marceles FC.
