20/4/11 MFC VS Chris Tan's Friend Team Match Review

Match Review by Brian Teo

Final Score: Chris Tan's Friend Team 1 : 1 MFC (Alex 1)

It was MFC's second weekday"Champions League" game under the flood lights and this time round, we are going against Chris Tan's friend team (CTFT). The turn out for the game was considerably good even though it was a late (week day) evening game. We also saw the return of Abi after his operation. The weather for the game was awesome despite the rain throughout the day as MFC looks set to take on the opponent.

Before the match begin, Captain GX warned us that "if you think that we can win 7-1 again on this ground, then you are wrong. Obviously this team looks more organized with jersey and such". And I think MFC felt the impact for the first 10-15mins chasing around the pitch as the opponent got the better of us. The match started with MFC adopting the 4-2-2-2 formation having Randall between the post, Sushi/lil Eric/Wee Hian/Zirong forming the backline, Jason/Chris01 protecting the defence, Gerald/Alex in the centre and Norris/Jeffery leading the attack.

As mentioned, MFC was having problem holding on to possession for the first 10-15mins as the CTFT players were playing some good passing game. The first goal for CTFT came not long when a long pass was put through to their left flank. The opponent made some decent run, twisting and turning before cutting pass Sushi and unleash a powerful shot just outside the box towards MFC's goal. The goal was undeserving.

For the rest of the first half, MFC starts to pick up more momentum and confident as we introduced Alan, Walter, Augustine and Abi into the game. The highlight of the match would be the sending off of one of the CTFT's after some "kicking-conflict" at the middle of the pitch which involved Alex. The CTFT player accused Alex for kicking him deliberately and gave Alex a push (reason for receiving the red card). Alex was lucky enough to escape with just a yellow card. Exact details of the incident, please ask Alex. Although the opponent was down with 10-men, MFC didnt really took on the advantage and continue to press on until the end first half (1-0 to CTFT).

During the break, apart from the usual tactic briefing from Captain GX, Walter also urged us to play our game and to enjoy the match which i believe most of us did!

The 2nd half started with 11-men a side again. 2nd half was more comfortable for MFC as we push forward and pull up the defence line. There was a few times where MFC came close to equalizing. Chris had 2 good chances, a header that went wide via a well taken corner and a right footed shot that shaved the right post. Jeffery and Norris also made numerous runs into opponent's penalty box, creating problem for their defence. Soon the opportunity came for MFC when Norris was brought down just outside the box. Freekick was given to MFC and as usual, our freekick master aka Alex stood forward for the shot. A nicely taken free kick curled itself towards the top right hand corner of the post which gave the keeper no chance of even smelling the ball. The equalizer gave MFC more confident and space to breath as we push the ball forward for more attacks.

As the night grew deeper, referee decided to blew the final whistle and call it a day for both sides as the game ended 1-1 draw. A good game for MFC I would say and a "win-able" game. Next game will be on Saturday against the ex VJC team. MFC would like to thank Randall for his service between the post and Sushi's tireless run.
