Match Review by Alan Chiang
Final Score - Babylon 7: 1 MFC (Gifford)
If you guys can remember the lyrics of Lady Gaga’s song titled “Speechless”, you will recall a line stating, “You’ve left me speechless, so speechless”. Maestro was definitely dumbfounded by the ever-seasoned opponents. The stormy weather was also unkind to Maestro, thus leaving some players waiting for a change of condition before heading on to the pitch. Anyway, there were at least 16 players who braved through all odds and finished the match, safe and sound.
Maestro suffered the biggest defeat yet for this year, thanks to opponents’ decisive and possessive control of the game. Maestro was always on a backfoot right from the start of the game. It did not take too long for the opponents to score their first goal and they continued to put two more goals before the break.
Knowing that it will be hard to crack through the opponents’ defence, Guo Xian reminded all to keep trying and at least to find a few goals to keep a close deficit. However, the opponents were just not going to take their stroll in the park as they put in two goals before Gifford pounced on a through pass from Hakim to sting the back of the net.
The next opponents’ goal, which was their sixth, was definitely the best set-up goal ever (I guess everyone will agree to that). It all started from the opponents’ backline, through the centre midfield, who supplied a long range diagonal pass to the right winger. Coupled with strength and pace, he dashed down the flank and delivered an accurate cross for his striker to nick it at the far post. All it took was probably less than a minute. (That reminded me of the goal which was converted by Robin Van Persie through Walcott’s cross, in the game against Wolves?)
Within minutes left to play, the opponents got their seventh and got away the happiest players. Though the final scoreline stood in opponents’ favour, Maestro also deserved a pat on the back for trying to play and contain the game.
Maestro would have to take something from this match and probably to mimic the opponents’ style of play in order to improve the (beautiful) game. Maestro could also take note of the individuals’ strength in each department, be it defence, midfield or forward.
Note: Several players have asked for Big Eric’s return. He will be coming back after his IPPT. Until then, let’s continue to play to our best and welcome him with the next utmost performances.
High points:
- Gifford banged in a half volley goal, a consolation for Maestro
- The artificial field was still playable despite the bad weather
- Stand-in goalkeeper Randahl, GX’s friend, helped out in several occasions
Low points:
- Maestro not being able to hold up the ball, thanks to opponents’ quick close-down approach game
- Lightning and thunderstorm
