6/6/2010 MFC Vs Chinese Milan Team Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: MFC 5 : 6 Chinese Milan (Augustine 1, Guo Xian 1, Gifford 1, Rong An 1, Chris Tan 1)

For lack of a better name, the opponents this week shall be known as the Chinese Milan team and it was a cracker of a match!

MFC lined up a good team, with about 15 players making it to Kovan and meeting the Chinese Milan team for the first time, it was certainly a new experience for MFCians. With Gary back in goal, match coordinator Guo Xian chose to go with the 4-5-1 formation from the start.

It was a good move as the MFC centre midfield controlled the possession. The opponents were not really strong but had several good players who caused mayhem for MFC all over. Their left winger was a constant threat throughout the match and it was only 5 minutes into the match that he struck the first goal after embarking on a mazy run, turning his marker inside out, before striking the ball far beyond the MFC keeper.

MFC almost got the equalizer from 3 corners; Afiq and Chris Tan came close to scoring with good headers. However, Chris Tan did make up for the miss by firing in the equalizer after reacting fastest to a deflected freekick from Guo Xian. He took the ball down well before striking the ball low into the goal.

The Chinese Milan team scored again from a corner kick after Zirong's best attempts to keep the ball off resulted in an own goal. MFC never gave up and it was Gifford who scored the equalizer again. He latched onto a good through ball from Alex and put the ball beyond the keeper.

The match begun to open up and with teams attacking, more goals were in the pipeline. The Chinese Milan team took their chances very well and scored with most of their attempts while MFC was good in keeping possession and fast on the counter attack with Guo Xian, Rong An and Gifford taking turns to terrorize the defence. For the rest of the game, the Chinese Milan team would pull ahead 5 times and each time the Chinese Milan team went ahead, MFC would fightback with a goal to pull the scores closer.

Guo Xian, Rong An and Augustine all scored good goals to try to level the scores; Guo Xian scored after Afiq's determined run saw him reap benefits by providing the assist to Guo Xian. Rong An beat his marker before scoring and Augustine's goal was borne from a good cross from Chris Tan. Augustine's fine run into the box allowed him to get in front of his marker and get possession before slipping the ball past the goalkeeper.

At the final whistle, though MFC lost, it was a very entertaining and open match with some good play from both teams. MFCians all played their hearts out too and everyone's tired faces at the end spelled that out clearly.

High Points
1) Another fine performance from Chris Tan in his defensive midfield position
2) More possession and passing from MFC midfield today
3) Team effort from all MFCians; everyone ran their lungs out today!
4) Cross for coming down to support but not playing a single minute
5) Zirong's birthday surprise! We got cake!
6) Guo Xian and Lil Eric for coordinating the match today!

Low Points
1) A tired defence meant soft goals were conceded; no one is to blame though as everyone was tired out
