14/3/2010 MFC Vs CSB Marine Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: CSB Marine 0 : 4 MFC (Guo Xian 1, Augustine 1, Norris 1, Gifford 1)

The heavy rain did not dampen MFC's mood for a victory as MFC strode to their 9th win of the season over CSB Marine.

The pre match attendance was relatively poor but with new comers Abi, Suffian and Hakim making their appearance, there was hope of a high scoring game. The defence was lacking severly with a half fit Norris leading the backline. In attack, MFC had good options between leading goal scorer Guo Xian, Gifford and Suffian.

The referee began the match though there was a downpour and that certainly affected MFC's normal playing style. It was a scrappy first 20 minutes, with MFC's strategy being to play the long ball and attack from the flanks which were relatively dry comapred to the rest of the pitch. CSB Marine were no pushovers though as they tried to initiate some attacks fo their own. Each time, MFC was there to thwart those chances.

Just when it seemed that the first half would be a 0-0 score, Augustine scored the first goal of the game. Augustine's recent good scoring form continued when he took advantage of a loose ball and an out of position goalkeeper to score from just outside the penalty box into an empty goal. Guo Xian then added to his season tally by going on a mazy run across the penalty box edge and scoring with a low shot past the goalkeeper who was blatantly out of position again. Those goals were due credit for MFC's efforts and hard running in the first half.

At half time, MFC was leading 2-0 and yearning to put the game beyond CSB Marine. It was certainly no problems, especially with Suffian being in his usualy lively self. He came close on 2 occasions in the 2nd half; 1 chance hit the post and another just missed the goal by a whisker. He was not the only one putting on a good performance; goalkeeper Gary also did well to keep the clean sheet especially during a one on one chance from CSB Marine.

Gifford then scored his 5th of the season after chasing down a long through ball from MFC, hustling his oway past the defenders before applying a good finish to extend the lead to 3 goals. MFC was still smelling blood and pushed more people upfront to attack. Norris eventually sealed the scoreline with a beautiful finish, making it 4-0. Suffian was the provider, his through ball to Norris was inch perfect and Norris' finish was good, as his first time chip lobbed over the goalkeeper.

The match ended soon after. 4-0 to MFC and this victory would have brought MFC on par with the other leaders of the table. With an extra game in hand, the chances of MFC winning the league this season looks a possible target.

High Points
1) Good performance by Gary. His reading of the game, ball catching was excellent especially given the adverse wet conditions today
2) A frontline of Suffian, Guo Xian and Gifford is looking very exciting indeed.
3) All MFC players gave their best, especially those who played in the first 20 mins.

Low Points
1) The pitch after the rain was unplayable.
2) MFC needs to play through the centre more often. Currently MFC plays mainly via the flanks or through long balls.
3) Shortage of defenders. We are still trying to fill the big void left by Eric's departure.
