20/9/09 MFC Vs Young Wolf United Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: Young Wolf United 2 : 3 MFC (Guo Xian 2, Norris 1)

Maestro FC built on the winning momentum from the past few weeks by earning another victory over Young Wolf United. Though it was a friendly, the pitch action was far from it, with both teams looking for a win.

MFC had a strong team for selection and certainly, the team showed their intent to win by starting waves and waves of attacks against Young Wolf United. Guo Xian, who has been prolific in front of the goal, failed to convert numerous opportunities presented. However, he finally got on the score sheet mid way through the first half. Cutting in from the left flank, Guo Xian dribbled past the defence before unleashing an uncontrollable left foot shot which went into the top right of the goal.

The goal was well deserved for all the efforts MFC put in but there was still time for another goal, also from Guo Xian. Receiving a good through ball from Jason, Guo Xian received the ball with his back to the goal and his sudden turn-shot caught the defender unaware and it lobbed the goalkeeper who was off his line.

It was 2-0 to MFC at half time and the team was looking for more. However, as recent matches had shown, MFC has a tendency to go to sleep once a lead has been established. This weakness was again exposed when Young Wolf United scored 2 in the second half to draw even. It sparked a mini revival within the team and soon after, MFC got the winner courtesy of a Norris header. MFC was awarded a freekick to which freekick specialist Alex took. His cross ball into the penalty area was excellent, beating a flapping goalkeeper. Norris rose the highest to nod the ball into the goal.

From then on, it was a matter of defending the lead, with the MFC defence doing well to clear the opposition's attacks. Kartik and Lil Eric in particular showed good form by intercepting crucial balls and keeping the attacks at bay.

The final whistle was soon blown and MFC celebrated this hard fought win. This match showed that MFC was capable of a tight defence and was also capable of maintaining ball possession. What needs to be resolved is the concentration in a match, which was sorely lacking in recent games where opposition teams are able to claw their way back into the game.

High Points
1) Guo Xian's goals were of the highest quality. His form of 7 goals in 3 matches was also testamenet to his ability to score.
2) Lil Eric did well with his sliding tackles.
3) Brillant freekick once again from Alex which led to the winning goal
4) Norris's winner proved that he was more "Vermaelen" than "Vermicilli"

Low Points
1) MFC needs to have better concentration during games
