2/8/2009 MFC Vs Black Knights Match Review

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: Black Knights 1 : 3 MFC (Walter 1, Calvin 1, Augustine 1)

MFC rediscovered the winning feeling again with this much needed friendly win against Black Knights. The turnout this week was once again dismal, with only 12 players turning up. However, these 12 players bit the bullet and outlasted the Black Knights in all departments.

MFC started the match in a 4-5-1 formation and it clicked right from the start. The Black Knights was crowded out from the midfield and MFC took control of the proceedings from there on, with Hanrong, Alex and Gerald pulling the midfield strings and keeping possession. It did not take long for the first goal to arrive; Augustine beat the offside trap and latched onto a lovely through ball by Alex. He cut in from the left flank and his finish left the goalkeeper stranded.

It was a well deserved goal and MFC almost got a second from Augustine. It was a similar setup as the first goal, the only difference was the quality of the finish as Augustine miscued his shot. Gifford was next to come close; his presence as a lone striker caused all sorts of problems for the Black Knights defence and he almost scored on 2 occasions, barring the excellent goalkeeping from Black Knights.

Walter got the second goal via an interception on the right flank. He galloped down the right flank and held off a defender's challenge before shooting past the goalkeeper.

The first half ended 2-0 to MFC and spirits were high going into the second half. MFC picked up where they left off from the first half and a third goal was on the cards. It was Calvin who got the third goal in a match which was becoming a goalfest for MFC. He intercepted the ball from midfield and dribbled towards the penalty box before unleashing a shot from an acute angle which beat the goalkeeper at the far post.

Norris then missed a few chances when presented with scoring chances due to good goalkeeping from the Black Knights goalkeeper. However, credit to the Black Knights who never gave up despite the 3-0 deficit. They pulled one goal back when MFC keeper Chris Lau made a clearance error ala Ben Foster. The Black Knights striker put the loose ball into the goal which sparked a revival in the Black Knights.

Chances continued to be created at both ends and when the final whistle came, the taste of a long awaited victory was sweet for the 12 MFC players who gave their all today.

High Points
1) MFC's first victory
2) Good ball possession with moments of brillance from players throughout the match
3) Hanrong leading the midfield which controlled much of the gameplay
4) Everyone had a good time

Low Points
1) Chris Lau's gift of a goal
2) For the second straight week, attendance has been poor
