Match Review by Chris Tan
Final Score: MFC 2 : 1 Pine Close Boys (Rong An, Davanish)
Maestro Start the League with a comfortable win over Pine Close Boys
The victory marked a spirited response from Maestro, who started the league without a win in 5 matches previously. Rong An and Davanish strike save Maestro the embarrassment and grab the 3 points needed to fuel Maestro to continue the league well.
The game started well with a response of 19 players; noticeably with the returning Norris, prospectful newcomers, and a determined scorer Rong An. Alan, the vice-captain wanted to secure this win, heads out to give a short tactically game plan with familiar 4 -5 -1 formation.
Pine Close looked a better side in the early stages, with control and pace, they are no-pushover of any sort. However, their strikes are often poor and weak, easily demolished by the Wee Hian and Alan most of the time. Maestro are wasting chances by losing possession easily to their opponents.
The first clearcut chance fell to Pine Close after a through ball from the midfield caught Wee Hian 1 Vs 1 against the strong plump striker. The miscommunication between him and Gary, allows the striker to get the better of the ball and tap it into the net. This is a surprising start for Pine Close as they looked more like the underdogs to win the game against the experienced club. The joyous celebration was Maestro demoralizing start to the campaign.
Maestro continued to have many close shaves, noticeably from one corner that hit the bar and Gary's spectacular save in the box. Pine Close simply cannot find the 2nd goal that they desperately wanted.
Maestro came close just before the end of first half after Davanish squared a ball at the edge of the box to Gerald, but he failed to make proper contact and blast the ball high and wide. The half ended with Pine Close leading 1 - 0, from then on Maestro never look back.
During the break, Maestro have a discussion of placing a 4 - 4 -2 formation to force the attacking play down Pine Close Boys Half. This tactic started the next half brighter, Maestro gaining all the possession and passing, while squeezing Pine Close half by the neck. The first chance of the 2nd half fell to Davanish who dribbled across 3 defenders on the left flank and put a cross into the box, but unable to connect to any Maestro players there. The defenders of Pine Close are finding hard to cope with Alex spraying balls to fast pace Norris and Rong An too.
The playing style of Maestro doesn't take long for Davanish to find the net. A spectacular turn scissor-kick finished Pine Close hope of ever winning this match. The goal will definitely be a candidate for goal of the month. Cheers can be heard from the spectators and everybody understand that the faith is restored for the experienced guys.
A few minutes later, a lose ball which may seem to be collected by Pine Close defender turned deadly when Rong An sprint down to steal the ball from him. The forward run allows him to deal 1 on 1 situation with the goalkeeper which he taps the ball swiftly into the net. The Rooney never say die attitude was impressive and well applauded by the players and he has redeemed himself of the poor scoring form that he claimed.
This 2nd goal is crucial, and points to be the winning goal of the game. Alex also have a free kick scored but was ruled out by referee for a push in the box.
Maestro quickly turned back to 4 - 5 -1 formation to defend the lead. There are a few scares from Pine Close: one goalkick seemed harmlessly into the ball turn deadly when it bounces at the edge of the box, Gary failed to punch the ball away with pressure from the striker, and the striker manage to head towards the net. Luckily the slow moving ball roll just right beside the post for a goalkick.
Another scare happened when Chris, Alan and Wee Hian converge to a moving ball which none claimed to collect. However, the striker simply pass it back to Gary for a nice pickup.
It was also a remarkable result for Maestro side but Maestro should never be complacent; i.e. Maestro had conceded 13 goals in their previous 5 friendly. We can do better than that though West Brom is famous for the wrong reasons.
