(Goals from Rong An (x2) and Howard)
Match review by Alan Chiang
Sunday, 16 October 2011, Katong Field – Three goals in the first half were enough to see Maestro FC extend its unbeaten run to five consecutive games. Hotshot Rong An delivered (like FedEx – live to deliver) two goals from range and ever-reliable Howard nicked a free kick from 20 yards, where the opponent’s goalkeeper could not hold on to his looping shot.
Clad in the new away yellow (looking like bees) kit, Maestro FC controlled the start of the game with much precise passing and utmost confidence. Maestro FC managed to keep ball possession for most part of the game and it did not take too long before the first goal sparked a good winning run.
Rong An delivered the first blow to Star FC when his long-range effort found the back of the net. He also claimed full credit for his second long-range effort after rounding up the opponent’s right back. Maestro got the third goal for the first half when the opponent’s goalkeeper could not keep out Howard’s looping free kick.
Maestro captain Walter began the second half with the similar centre backs in Alan and Big Eric, and made a couple of changes to pump renewed energy to the squad. Star FC, one of the most exciting sides from China (as Walter and Gerald mentioned), truly showed that they were no pushovers. They fielded a more attacking side for the second half and threatened Maestro’s goal on several occasions.
Gary and the defenders managed to resist the opponent’s effort, coupled with the all-improved defensive displays by Paul and Jason. Maestro’s good defence also managed to convert to good attacking plays for most periods in the second half.
Gifford’s good holding play invited a reckless tuck-in from the opponent’s central defender in the penalty area. The referee did not hesitate to award Maestro the penalty, despite the opponent’s protests. However, Alan wasted a chance to extend Maestro’s lead when he ballooned his penalty kick (Gifford will get his chance next).
Late on, Jeffery saw his shot hit the right frame, and Rong An’s friend also had a clear chance at goal when he was placed through by Jeffery. His shot went wide as the opponent’s defender closed down on him. After all, Maestro managed to keep a precious clean sheet and scored three quality goals. Kudos to Maestro and the players who turned up for this friendly encounter with Star FC. Just two more friendly games before Maestro embark on the X-League journey!

High points:
- Three good goals in the bag for the first half.
- Good all-round displays in defence, midfield and attack.
- Swift passing and holding plays allowed Maestro to control the game with ease.
Low points:
- Cricket players and spectators were screaming across the pitch. (“We have paid for the field, guys.”)
- Should have scored more goals in the second half.
- What happened to the match ball?
- Hot sun (But can’t blame the weather lar. We are living in tropical climate conditions.)

Fantastic match as we closed down the opponents quick and gave them little or no time to play their game..Clinical finishing from Rong An and Howard finished off the opponents!
Keep up the unbeaten runs!
