12/12/2010 MFC Vs Russian Club Match Review

Match Review by Brian Teo
Final Score: Russian Club 1 : 1 MFC (Hakim)

The sun was scorchingly hot this afternoon as the team traveled to the Bukit Timah pitch looking all ready to take on the Russian team for the 2nd time in the League. A totally of 13 players turn up for the match (minus Walter as he is still on a one match ban after receving a red card for his previous game). Although with only 13 players, the turnout consists of a good mixture of defenders, midfielders and forward players. That being said, we also saw the return of “joe GARY hart” in between the poles. Before the game starts, Captain GX emphasizes on playing a short passing game and conserve our energy as we do not have many subs for the match.

Soon the match kicked off and it was a tug-of-war game in the midfield as both sides battle hard to create chances for the team. MFC came close on many occasions but all were either blasted off the goal or comfortably collected by the Russian keeper. Hakim in particular almost score from a Maestro corner but the well derserved effort went wide.

As mentioned by Captain GX, MFC did a great job passing a lot of ground balls trying to lurk our way into the Russians’ defence and it was MFC who drew the first blood when Brian did a 1-2 passing with Alan and the Vice-Captain (Alan) swing a cross into the Russians’ pentalty box. The cross missed Norris but Hakim was there at the far post to collect the “gift” and tap it in from close range. It was a good build up from MFC and a well deserved goal for the team. MFC was delighted.

The game went on in similar style. The Russians did have many chances as well but were well caught offside with MFC holding a good defence line. The Russians got 1 back and reset the whole game just before half time from a well taken corner. The header was a strong and powderful one leaving our “joe GARY Hart” with no chance but to see the pass flew pass him. It was a defensive mistake as well. Half time ended with the score at 1-1.

For the second half of the match, the Russians put on some fresh legs into the game and tried to play a lot of long balls into MFC’s half but all were well defended by Alan, Wee Hian, Brian, Howard and Walter (Don’t ask me why he is playing. I didnt know he came on too. Lol). Seriously speaking, the Russians were no where close to goal in the second half and this was further proven by “joe GARY hart” as he mentioned after the game that “I really zuo bo.. can la kopi”. Once again, 3 cheers to MFC’s defence and midfielders who came back tirelessly to deny the Russians.

MFC should have scored twice in the second half. The first chance was a fantastic effort from our injured Captain as he unleashed a powerful shot towards goal but were denied by the woodwork leaving the bar rattling. The second effort was Hakim once again with a nice volley from a corner but to see it flew above the bar.

Soon the final whistle came and the match ended in a tie game. MFC definitely enjoyed the game despite the HOT weather (and i really mean H.O.T). MFC’s 4th unbeaten matches in a row!

High Points
1) Excellent defensive showing from Alan, Wee Hian, Brian, Howard and Walter
2) Gary said “I really zuo bo.. can la kopi”
3) Guo Xian's commitment to the team as he played as striker despite injuries
4) Good ground passing game from MFC.
5) MFC ability to hold the Russians with only 13 men. Good conservation of energy.

Low Points
1) The weather! Enough said.
2) MFC midfielders could have played better in closing down the Russians’ long ball in
3) MFC need to work on defending corners
4) No bubble tea shop at Bukit Timah!
