17/10/10 MFC Vs Team Eighties Match Review

Match Review by Gary Khoo
Final Score: Team Eighties 0 : 0 MFC

After last week’s draw against the Russian team, MFCians were desperate to achieve a result this week against team Eighties despite being just a friendly match. This is also a good chance for Maestro to let the new players have a longer playing time on the field so as to gel together better as a team!

With around 20 players to choose from, Captain Guoxian opted to play an attacking 4-4-2 formation, with young striker Jeffrey partnering Norris in attack, Alex and Gerald patrolling the midfield and Wee Hian and Alan in defend with Gary in between the poles. The match started off with Eighties looking the more dangerous of both sides. A long ball pinged from their midfield found the eighties’ striker clear on goal, but Gary was quick to sense the danger as he rush out of the box, chest the ball and clear it to safety.

However, it was not long before Maestro retained possession. Maestro FC was certainly at their best, playing a string of beautiful ground passes and the link-up play between the midfield and the strikers was commendable. Maestro FC had their first chance, with striker Norris bursting pass his marker and having a one on one chance against the Eighties’ keeper but he drag his shot wide. Rong Ah was soon introduced into the game to replace Jeffrey. Our star striker created a lot of problems for the opponents with his blistering pace and dribbling skills. Maestro FC did find the back of the net, with Alex striking a superb shot into the back of the net, only for the referee to rule out his effort due to an indirect free kick.

The 1st half ended with Maestro FC having a larger share of the possession, also credit to Gerald for putting in a combative display in the middle of the field. Maestro FC was certainly unlucky to not take the lead despite numerous chances.

The 2nd half started with Guoxian making a few chances, playing Paul in the middle of the park and Jonathan occupying the right back position. Just like the 1st half, Maestro FC was piling immense pressure on the Eighties defence as we looked the hungrier of both sides to get the win. The bees gained more momentum deep into the 2nd half. A beautiful cross by Alex find Hafiz who did well to control the ball before steering it to Rong Ah to unlease a shot , only to be saved by the diving Eighties keeper. Howard also had a one on one chance, but it was well saved by the Eighties’ keeper, who is absolutely top class!

After the match, Gary confessed that he could “limkopi” and “pao beibei mian” as there is absolutely no shot on target by team Eighties. The Eighties’ players soon get frustrated and throw in nasty tackles around the field. There were a few instances where fights almost broke up. The referee was displeased with one of the challenge by the Eighties player and issued a red card, but why is there still 11 Eighties players on the field! Nonetheless, the match continued with the bees looking the more dangerous of both sides.

The match ended 0-0. However, all Maestro players believe that a win is there for the taking but on a positive note, Maestro achieved yet another clean sheet. Hurray!

High Points

1. The whole team played well, with everyone putting in 100% effort! Good passing and link up play!

2. A powerful and combative display by Gerald in the middle of the park (Reminds of Roy Keane)

3. Gary could lim kopi, credit to a strong defence put up by Maestro FC!

Low Points

1. Poor performance by the referee. Why is there 11 eighties players after the red card was issued.

2. The referee seems to cut our playing time!

3. Maestro FC to exhibit more maturity after playing for so long!

4. Bad challenges by the eighties players
