Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: Minnows FC 1 : 0 MFC
Minnows FC was MFC's opponents this week and they are Alex's secondary school friends. Playing back at Katong after a 2 week absence was fun especially when the pitch just got its grass freshly cut!
Alas, the nice playing surface hardly saw any good passing by MFC this week. From the first whistle, MFC was at best good for certain periods of the game while Minnows FC took the game well.
MFC started without Captain Guo Xian and with Alex as the stand-in captain, he started MFC in the familiar 4-5-1 formation. It might be the hot afternoon heat but MFC was sluggish right from the start as Minnows FC were faster off the blocks. They had a few great chances as well but MFC was spared due to poor and wasteful finishing.
With chances few and far between, MFC was constantly on the back foot, defending against the Minnows fast attacks. If not for some good defending at the back by Wee Hian and Zirong, MFC would have been losing by at least a 3 goal deficit.
The second half started with half the team being made of the new players such as chinese friends Paul and Jason, thai kids Pom and Jeffrey and other friends. The gameplay was disjointed at best due to the lack of understanding between the new players. One good point was that they did prevent Minnows from scoring.
After about 10 minutes, the regular players started coming in, in hope of turning the game around. Sadly, Minnows FC took the lead when a through ball was received by a Minnows striker who did well to finish past keeper Gary who had been doing quite well in the match to keep out the Minnows.
The rest of the match was extremely uneventful as MFC fail to threaten Minnows in front of goal. The Minnows had a solid defence- good in the air, good at clearing crosses and goal threats.
100 marks for MFC's effort but recently MFC's gameplay seem to lack a certain quality. With the league season starting next week, lets hope MFC don't live up to the chosen EPL team name- West Brom Albion!
High Points
1) MFC's defence played quite well but still had some nervy moments
2) Gary's saves kept MFC in the game
3) Good attendance today
4) Thai youngster Jeffrey showed some glimpses of good reading of the game
Low Points
I1) Some might say the goal conceded was offside
2) MFC looked lost and out of ideas. We need to start finding our scoring touch
3) Some players are still selfish enough not to sahre playing time with others
