13/12/2009 MFC Vs CSB Marine Match Review and Photos

Match Review by Walter Tan
Final Score: CSB Marine 0 : 3 MFC (Alex 1, Gerald 1, Norris 1)

MFC opened yet another win with yesterday’s triumph over Division 3 opponents CBS Marine for their first ever league encounter with them. Past 2 friendly results against them shown that MFC had no problems dealing with this Chinese team and were surely the more dominant team in terms of goals scored and ball possession.

Sunday’s match line-up consist of 17 players which included Alan who is back from Aussie, Capt Eric and Kartik back from their exams and guest player Hairul. The match kicked off in high spirits in our usual 4-5-1 with the usual MFCians playing in their usual positions with the exception of Hairul taking over Capt Eric as center back and Alan on the right flank.

The game was played in a fairly comfortable pace during the 1st half with the opponents No.4 using his pace to outburst the MFC’s defence. Hairul and Norris did well to stop him on several occasions before MFC drew first blood. Alex, Maestro’s designated free kick taker beat “Chi Chuck” goalkeeper by putting the ball into the top left hand corner of the goalmouth. That goal dumbstruck the opponents leaving them looking dejected. However they could somehow see that coming as Alex had tested their goalkeeper during his 6 other free kicks taken in the first half alone.

Alan, Jonathan and Augustine all did good runs down the flank using their pace and skills to try trouble the opponents who were constantly pressurized by MFC midfielders. Hanrong and Gerald were busy “tussling” with their centre midfielders to win ball possession. Every MFCian doubled their work rate hoping to put the game beyond CBS Marine’s reach but the score didn’t change and remained at 1-0 to MFC.

The 2nd half started with Capt Eric back in his familiar role, with Lil Eric, Wee Hian and Kartik supporting him in defence. Gifford playing alone, upfront in attack and had a good chance to make it 2-0 but was denied a chance when his jersey was being pulled back by Lao Li after he sprinted past the tall centre back.

MFC continued to push forward and their efforts were paid off by a close range shot from Gerald after the keeper parried out yet another Alex’s free kick. Gerald was the nearest to react and he showed no mercy when he shot the ball right through the opponent’s goal. This brought MFC into much celebration as they surged 2-0 up just 10mins into the 2nd half.

With confidence growing, MFC steered themselves towards grabbing the 3rd goal. Alan dribbled the ball past their left midfielder “Tuncay” down the right flank for Walter to cross into the penalty box for Gifford but he didn’t capitalize on it. Guoxian then did his usual step over and dribbling flairs to try to score another goal but came to no avail. The 3rd goal then finally came from Norris as he brilliantly collected a perfect long pass from Gerald and slot it pass their keeper with ease. Celebrations for Norris were demonstrated by Guoxian who tried to offer to shine Norris’ vapour boots for him after Norris went into a goal drought last season.

Wee Hian, Brian, Kartik and Lil Eric also did well as rolling substitutes for MFC to stop the CBS Marine attacks. 2 wonderful saves from MFC goalkeeper Calvin kept their first clean sheet for this season and we certainly do hope to see more of this in the coming league games.

The final score was 3-0 to MFC and Capt Eric concluded in the post match briefing that the team performed well in the match and deserved to win 3-0. Smiles were seen on MFCians faces and we hope to see more of this.

High Points
1) Good turn up for the match, especially having Alan back
2) Calvin’s (Iker Kasia) first clean sheet for this league campaign
3) Good weather and rather fair refereeing
4) Fair play from both teams, no bad tackles or arguments throughout the 90mins

Low Points
1) Alex 2nd free kick being ruled out as a goal kick instead of a goal
2) Opponents filling in other players from other teams
3) Referee’s comment to MFC’s question on “Ref, How many minutes left?” was rather abstract to understand
