Final Score: FC FC 5 : 5 MFC (Norris 2, Guo Xian 3)
MFC continued maintained their unbeaten run with a third successive draw. The opponents this week were FC FC, a team made of mainly Malays and Thais in Red Devils disguise. Everyone was eager to get the game started, especially after a 2 weeks break from soccer. Captain Eric and Vice Captain Walter were present, as was Guo Xian, returning after his injury. His strike partner, Norris was also back upfront, after his stint in a "Clichy" type role. It was a strong MFC team and expectations for a win was in the air. MFC lived up to its expectations especially within the first 20 mins. The opponents barely had time to settle down and MFC just kept attacking in waves. |
If the opposition thought MFC would be satisfied and sit back to defend, they were wrong. A rout was on the cards and MFC was showing no signs of relenting. Chris Tan failed to convert 2 decent chances to extend the lead to 4-0 due to a combination of bad luck and poor finishing. He was not the only one; Kartik and Jonathan also had half decent chances.
FC FC did get on the score sheet with a well taken goal past keeper Calvin but that inspired MFC to try to put the game beyond reach. Guo Xian got on the scoresheet for MFC's 3rd goal; he capitalised on the poor communication between keeper and defender to pounce on a poor back pass before finishing well. The first half ended 3-1 to MFC and everyone was confident of repeating the same performance in the second half. What a second half it was...for FC FC! Firstly, MFC continued where it left off, scoring 2 more goals via Guo Xian, who was giving the opposing defence a torrid time with his surging runs. In between his goals, MFC had a penalty awarded but failed to convert it. |
With the score at 5-1 to MFC, the tides turned for MFC. Complacency set in and errors were evident from the gameplay. It was a nervy MFC performance from now on as FC FC managed to score a few in quick succession. With every goal they scored, they grew in confidence and attacked MFC in waves. As hard as MFC tried, the effort was found wanting as MFC conceded 3 goals. With a few minutes of the game left, FC FC completed an amazing 4 goal comeback to secure a draw.
The match ended in a pulsating 5-5 final score and it was definitely a good game for the neutrals. For MFC however, it was a case of what might have been. A draw was not so bad, considering it was a friendly but there were lessons to be learnt for everyone involved.
High Points
1) Norris finding his scoring touch again!
2) Guo Xian did well upfront and posed all sorts of problems for the opposition
3) MFC attacked well and created many chances to score more
4) Good condition to play in; soft ground and light breeze with little sun
Low Points
1) Nervy gameplay from MFC especially in the second half
2) How did we let a 4 goal lead disappear?
2) Failure to convert more chances into goals
3) MFC players need to learn to control gameplay through mroe fluid passing and confident distribution
