14/6/2009 MFC VS EASB GTR Match Review & Photos

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: EASB GTR 2 : 8 MFC (Guo Xian 2, Gifford 2, Calvin 1, Walter 1, Alan 1)

Photos from Mizuno RunThis weekend's game was billed as the one to halt a 3 match losing streak and MFC certainly obliged, romping home to a 8 goal fest and rediscovering that winning feeling.

The early morning Mizuno Run had quite a few MFCians running 10 km earlier in the day. Though tired, these players still turned up for the match and certainly they showed no signs of fatigue. Adopting a 4-4-2 formation, MFC begun the first half strongly, keeping possesion and trying to look for a chink in the defense armour. Barely 5 minutes into the first half, MFC got the first goal via an awarded penalty.
Regular penalty taker Guo Xian duly dispatched the ball into the goal and put MFC in the driving seat. MFC never looked back since; EASB GTR granted MFC a second goal courtesy of an own goal which resulted from Calvin's right wing cross. Walter further extended the lead to 3 goals by opening his scoring account with a fabulous looping long range shot from the right wing. The goalkeeper was caught in no man's land as the shot fell right into the extreme top left corner.

With half time approaching, Gifford joined in the scoring frenzy when he latched onto a long ball from Gerald, out muscled his marker and scored with a low shot. At half time, it was 4-0 to MFC.

The half time team talk was centred on keeping possesion of the ball and scoring more to offset the goals leaked in the previous matches. MFC did not disappoint as they went on to score another 4 more in the second half.

EASB GTR started the second half brighter and held possession of the ball, forcing MFC to backtrack and defend. For their valiant effort to stage a comeback, they got a goal worthy of any professional player.
A cleared corner fell to a EASB GTR player who volleyed the ball first time with such venom that caught everyone unaware. Cross tried to beat the ball away but at the sheer speed at which the ball was moving, it was almost impossible.

MFC hit back with 2 more goals; one from Calvin and one more from Guo Xian. For Calvin's goal, Guo Xian was forced wide in the penalty area and he decided to play creator instead, crossing the ball into the penalty area. The ball fell nicely to the head of a charging Calvin and he scored with a simple header. Guo Xian's goal was more of a classic, to be exact, ala Ryan Giggs' FA Cup semifinal classic. Receiving the ball at the half way line, he ran half the pitch, beat 2 defenders with his pace and trickery, before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

EASB GTR also got a second goal; though the goalscorer was suspiciously offside. There still was time for 2 more goals, this time from Alan and Gifford. Guo Xian played creator again for Alan; his through pass to Alan opened up the right flank and Alan duly galloped down the right wing, cut in sharply and shot past the EASB GTR keeper.

Gifford's afternoon of hassling the defenders into making mistake paid off when he got on the scoresheet again. Norris this time was the provider as he provided the killer pass to Gifford. Gifford used his physical presence well to win the ball off the defender and scored his second of the game.

For comic relief, Alex decided to play goalkeeper for the last few minutes and he proved quite adept at it, signalling the possibility of him playing as goalkeeper in future. The final whistle signalled one of MFC's biggest ever wins- an 8-2 victory. This match certainly reignited the winning spirit in the players as smiles were aplenty. Though the opponents today were weak, surely nothing could take the shine off this victory as MFC players returned to form.

High Points
1) MFC played with more ball possesion, ball control and passing. This should be continued.
2) Guo Xian's return to goalscoring form
3) Walter's screamer of a goal. If only we got it on video.
4) Though the opponents were weak, to score 8 goals is still an achievement
5) Chris Lau finally getting his chance as a striker, but he still has much to learn.
6) Gifford scoring 2 goals

Low Points
1) MFC should have preserved a clean sheet
2) MFC can still play better with more passing and possession
3) Gifford could have scored more; he missed at least 2 sitters.
