17/5/2009 MFC Vs DL Construction Match Review & Photos

Match Review by Gerald Tan
Final Score: DL Construction 2 : 6 MFC (Guo Xian (1), Norris(3), Gifford (1), Jonathan (1))

With the season already in full swing, Maestro sit pretty on the top of the table but with Loyalty.com chasing close behind, it is clear that to be champions at the end of the season, they will have to win every match.

This weekend's fixture was against a new team; DL Construction. They were making their league debut and what a way to welcome them into the league. MFC had a full team to choose from, with 5-6 available substitutes ready for action. The team started off in a 4-4-2 formation which has served them well in recent weeks.

The first real piece of action came very quickly into the first half. A DL Construction defender handled the ball in his penalty box and Referee Koh duly blew for the penalty.
Seasoned penalty taker Guo Xian stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a well taken penalty. The first goal was crucial; it helped to settle any pre match nerves that might be present, especially when playing an unknown team.

Looking to further extend the lead, MFC went on the offensive. There were a few chances to stretch the lead but Norris' finishing let him down on those occasions. Norris finally came good when he scored MFC's second. A long ball from Captain Eric found Norris on the left flank. He cut through the defenders and scored from an acute angle. With Norris in inspired form recently, the DL Construction defenders were in for a torrid time. Norris did not disappoint them, scoring again from another weighted long ball, this time from Alex. Receiving the ball, he turned the defender before lobbing it over the goalkeeper.

DL Construction were no pushover though, they lauched their own attacks on a few occasions but each time, they were snuffed out by Eric, Firdaus, Howard and Walter who could do no wrong. They expertly handled the offensive threat and they were the reason why MFC did not concede up to halftime.

3-0 at halftime but MFC was not going to be complacent as learnt from previous weeks. The objective was to try to keep a clean sheet but it was not to be as DL Construction pulled one back in the second half via a goalmouth scramble. Sensing the opponents were revived from that goal, MFC pushed forward for the fourth goal.
Norris this time became the provider, his long ball to half time substitute Gifford was inch perfect. Gifford chased the ball down and with the oncoming goalkeeper trying to intercept, Gifford pushed the ball past him and slotted home into an open goal.

Norris finally completed his second hat-trick of the season when he scored with a diving header from Howard's cross. DL Construction got a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty due to a handball in the penalty area and they scored from the spot to make it 5-2. With the match close to its end, it was not too late for MFC to have the last say, via a goal from Jonathan. Howard's shot turned cross found Jonathan lurking at the far post and he scored with a powerful shot into the right side of the goal.

The scoreline would have increased even more, had it not been for some good saves from the opponent's goalkeeper. He kept out excellent efforts from Augustine and Howard. Cross also had his moment when he came off the line early to win a one on one face off with the opposing striker.

The match ended 6-2 in favour of MFC, putting them on top of the league with a 3 points lead, though having played one match more than their closest rivals Loyalty.com. The competition is certainly begining to heat up!

1) Norris's form: 2 hat-tricks already!
2) MFC defence put up a 5 star show in keeping the opponents at bay
