10/4/2009 MFC VS SunSports Chinese Team Match Review

Match Review by Alan Chiang
Final Score: SunSports Chinese Team 4: 7 MFC (Jonathan, Alex (2), Alan (2), Chris Tan (2))

Lightning didn’t strike just once at Katong today. Lightning struck as many as seven times as Maestro FC thumped in seven goals against a newly-assembled Chinese team organized by the favourable Mr Koh. It was certainly a “Good Friday” for Maestro FC.

Maestro started the game with nine outfield players and had to borrow two of the opponent’s players to make up the numbers. But that didn’t take long as Howard and Silas stepped up their game as they entered for the first time.

The goal rout began with Jonathan scoring a superb effort when he was placed through on goal.

Not long after, Alan capitalized on a loose ball and lobbed the goalkeeper to put Maestro up at 2-0. Chris Tan added a third when he fired an accurate long-range shot from 25 yards. The Chinese team managed to pull a goal back just before half time.

Maestro was up 3-1 at half time when the bad weather poured in to delay the second half further. After which, the ball was almost impossible to move around on the wet surface.

Maestro began on the back foot and allowed the Chinese team to equalize at 3-3 with two quick goals. As the dark and gloomy clouds were passing quickly, Maestro’s goals came in swiftly. There were as many as four consecutive goals that were scored between the centre midfielders comprising of Alan, Chris and Alex.

Chris pounced on the loose ball while Alex scored a superb free kick from 20 yards out. Alan put in a strong header after a precise cross from Guo Xian on the left flank. Alex then added another shot from close range to bring the score line to 7-3.

The Chinese team managed to place in another consolation goal as the game was almost over. Maestro FC did put up a great performance even though there were only 11 outfield players. Confidence level reached an all-time high for the first time as Maestro began to find their scoring touches.

High Points
1) The dedicated and committed 11 outfield players including Chris Lau, Howard, Firdaus, Walter, Norris, Silas, Alex, Chris Tan, Alan, Jonathan and Guo Xian.
2) The clinical finishing is BACK! 6 out of 7 goals scored by Centre Midfielders
3) Walter’s first attempt at Centre Back position proved fruitful.
4) Jonathan’s mazy runs, Alex’s distribution on the pitch, Guo Xian’s Ferrari engine for a particular counter-attack and others who have contributed in a way or another.

Low Points
1) The wet and muddy pitch after the heavy downpour.
2) Guo Xian didn’t manage to score. (so many chances went wide)
3) Some Chinese players were not playing fairly
4) Chris Lau needs to improve on positioning as well as confidence (be more courageous!)
